How the model works

Workload first. Headcount second.

The calculator totals room-cleaning minutes, divides them by productive minutes in a paid shift, then rounds up to a workable daily assignment. Seven-day FTE coverage accounts for days off and the relief reserve you enter.

  1. 01
    Forecast the room mix

Occupied rooms are separated into departures and stayovers receiving service.

  2. 02
    Translate rooms into minutes

Each service type uses an editable time assumption, plus any rotational deep-clean work.

  3. 03
    Protect the productive window

Breaks, cart setup, travel, linen replenishment and non-room work reduce room-cleaning capacity.

  4. 04
    Plan the full week

Daily positions become seven-day coverage FTE, including the selected relief reserve.

Better staffing starts with a room standard teams can repeat.

Pair the labor plan with clear housekeeping procedures and a durable linen specification built for the property.

Hotel housekeeping staffing questions

How many rooms should one hotel housekeeper clean in a shift?

There is no universal number. Room size, checkout mix, stayover policy, bed configuration, service standard, travel time and condition all matter. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety notes that room service commonly takes 15–30 minutes and cites a case study of 16 rooms per shift. Use your own property time study in this calculator.

Why does the calculator subtract non-room time?

A paid shift is not eight uninterrupted hours of room cleaning. Breaks, briefings, cart setup, linen pickup, travel between rooms, guest requests and handoff all reduce productive room time. Combining those minutes into one editable allowance keeps the model transparent.

What does seven-day coverage FTE mean?

It estimates how many full-time-equivalent employees are needed to cover each daily position across seven days, based on workdays per employee and the relief reserve. It is not the same as the number of people scheduled on one day.

Does this replace a time study or labor agreement?

No. This is an early planning model. Property-specific time studies, accessibility needs, local rules, union agreements, brand standards and management judgment should govern the final schedule.
